How it is calculated
Margin vs markup, what is the difference.
In this article
Margin and markup
Margin is profit divided by the selling price. Markup is profit divided by cost. The same numbers give different results: an item costing IDR 70,000 sold for IDR 100,000 makes IDR 30,000 profit, a 30% margin but a 42.9% markup.
| Target | Selling price formula |
|---|---|
| Margin | cost ÷ (1 − margin − platform fee) |
| Markup | cost × (1 + markup) ÷ (1 − platform fee) |
Cost here is the unit cost plus other per-unit costs, such as packaging or shipping you cover.
Don't forget marketplace fees
If a marketplace takes 10% of the selling price, the price has to cover it. Without it, the 30% margin you planned can shrink to 20%.
Example
Cost IDR 60,000, packaging IDR 5,000, a 10% marketplace fee, and a 25% target margin: price = IDR 65,000 ÷ (1 − 0.25 − 0.10) = IDR 100,000. Profit per unit is IDR 25,000 after the IDR 10,000 fee.
FAQ
Questions about pricing
Should I use margin or markup?
Both work if you are consistent. Margin compares easily with your profit and loss; markup is easier when adding profit on top of cost.
Should I add VAT to the price?
Only if your business is VAT-registered (PKP) and charges VAT. The calculator shows the price including 11% VAT for comparison.
What is a reasonable margin?
It depends on the business. Everyday goods often have thin margins, while your own products or services can be much higher. Compare it with your fixed costs using the break-even calculator.
