How it is calculated

Why your hourly rate must be higher than it looks.

Not every hour is billable

Freelancers rarely bill 40 hours a week. Some time goes on admin, finding clients, meetings, and unpaid revisions. If only 60% of your hours are billable, your rate has to cover 100% of your needs from those 60%.

The formula

StepFormula
Yearly need(income + business costs per month) × 12
After taxneed ÷ (1 − tax percentage)
Billable hours per yearhours per week × (52 − weeks off) × billable percentage
Hourly rateyearly revenue ÷ billable hours

Example

A target income of IDR 10,000,000 and costs of IDR 2,000,000 a month, 40 hours a week, 60% billable, 4 weeks off: IDR 144,000,000 a year divided by 1,152 hours = IDR 125,000 an hour, or IDR 1,000,000 a day.

About tax

Income from independent professions, such as consultants or freelance designers, cannot use the 0.5% MSME final tax (PP 20/2026). Enter a tax percentage that fits your situation, or ask a tax consultant.

FAQ

Questions about rates

What share of hours is reasonable to bill?

Many freelancers sit at 50–70%. If you are not sure, log your hours for two weeks and separate what you billed.

Hourly rate or project price?

An hourly rate is still useful as a basis: a project price can be estimated hours times your rate, plus a buffer for revisions.

Should insurance and equipment be included?

Yes. Include all monthly business costs, including insurance, software, internet, and equipment payments.
